Three Deepest Desires

Throughout my nearly 20 years as a creative entrepreneur, I’ve learned so many things - some of them the easy way and some of them the hard way. Now that I am approaching a huge milestone in both business and life, I’m continually pursuing my three deepest desires: fulfillment, freedom, and fun. Before I start any new projects, I ask myself, “does this fit into at least one of the three F’s?” If it does, I’m all in. If not, I move on, allowing space for bigger and better things. I haven’t always had such clarity on the pursuits that make me happy though. It’s come through a lot of struggles, soul searching, making messes, and deep introspection. I’m still a work in progress, but here are my top 3 tips for feeling care-free while being fearless in the pursuit of what makes you shine.

  1. Let go of perfection. No one is perfect. Do your best and enjoy the process. The thing about perfectionism is that it goes hand-in-hand with another “p” word– procrastination. Putting something off until it’s perfect means that it will most likely never be completed. Pursuing an unattainable goal prevents you from sharing your gifts with the world.

  2. Learn from failure. You win some, you learn some. There’s always a lesson you can take away. Giving up is easy; sticking with something and working through the negative emotions a failure can stir up is hard, complicated work. Not every single thing I’ve attempted in my career has worked the way I hoped. That doesn’t mean I should stop taking risks or dreaming big. On the contrary, a failure can teach me more about how to be successful in the future.

  3. Be yourself. Everyone has a unique story to tell. Everyone is on a unique path. Be authentic and unafraid to share your gifts. Draw inspiration from others— no real art or content is created in a vacuum— but don’t undercut your special personality or flare. You have a lot to add to this world. Let your light shine, flaws and all.
