My Own Take on a Sketch - By Kinsey
Hey everyone! We got to put our own spin on this awesome sketch and I’m sharing my take on it as well as a couple of fun ways to create your own custom patterned papers using the Plus One acrylic stamps and watercolors. (Shanna shared her layout here- be sure to check it out if you haven’t had a chance yet…so awesome!)
I’m a huge fan of sketches and sketching because it’s much easier for me visualize my own photos and supply choices when looking through greyscale sketches. I also love that one sketch can be turned into tons of different layouts by just scooting, flipping, or rotating the sketch/ page elements and that’s what I did with this one…I rotated the original sketch to the left, converted it to an 8.5x11 size, scooted the large cluster of elements up a bit, and made it more linear with blocked off areas for each item.
Usually my finished layouts end up a lot different than how I intended because I don’t sketch to scale so this one was surprisingly on point with my initial plan. I started with a white woodgrain textured cardstock that I painted with pearlescent watercolors (silvery-grey) and then while that was drying, I got to work on some custom patterned papers using acrylic stamps and watercolors (more on this in a minute). Once everything was dry, I glued the circle pattern to the bottom edge of my woodrain cardstock and then covered the seam with a block of contrasting patterned paper (black/white dot 8.5x5 inches). Next, I started adding all the elements from my sketch along with embellishments. I finished it off with some sewing to hold everything in place.
To recreate the watercolored/stamped pattern I made for the bottom section of my layout: 1) Supplies: Plus One Stamps, black dye based ink pad, smooth white cardstock or watercolor paper, water soluble crayons or watercolors, paint brush w/ water
2) Start stamping in the middle of the bottom edge of the cardstock and work your way out to the left and right edges. Stamp all the way off the paper to mimick the look of a patterned paper.
3) If using water soluble crayons- outline or highlight as much or as little as you like. I filled in a few of the outlined circles for mine and left several plain.
4) With a wet paintbrush, go over the areas that you “colored” with the water crayons and let dry. If you prefer regular watercolors disregard the water crayon bits
To make a repeating text based patterned background:
1) Using a pencil, lightly draw a base guideline for your first row of stamped text. Repeat the stamp end to end across your paper. *TIP: I use a fine tip sharpie to draw a line on my acrylic blocks to help with keeping everything as straight as possible. The sharpie wipes right off with a magic eraser once I finish. Once the first row is done, start the next row by offsetting your stamp (see image 1 above: in the second row, I began by aligning the “x” so that it was directly under the “o” in the row above it.)
2) Continue the pattern by repeating the steps in #1 until you’ve filled your space.
3) Trim to whatever size or shape, die cut out of it, or paper punch shapes out of it and you’re good to go!
