Feeling the love

She was smiling on her 2nd day in the hospital (when this photo was taken) but now it’s Day 15 and she is in the ICU after multiple surgeries. My grandma is the strongest person I know, but if you’re the praying kind, our family would appreciate the healing thoughts and prayers.
Many of you may have already seen this on Instagram and Facebook, and I just wanted to let you know that we are all beyond grateful for your amazing words. I read many of the comments before boarding a flight from Boston to Los Angeles and was in tears walking down the tarmac. The comfort of friends from all over the world can make such a difference. At first I was frustrated at the fact that the American Airlines plane didn’t have internet on board for the nearly 6 hour flight. Then it occurred to me that I could use the time for reading my friend, Kristin Harmel’s new book, The Sweetness of Forgetting. Within the first 30 pages I was in tears once again, and thankful at about that time the food service was starting. I began chatting with the lady next to me who clearly noticed my tears. Long story short, after we started talking, we didn’t stop. For the entire rest of the flight we covered everything from Ahpo’s health to marriage to family to our favorite destinations around the globe. Not only is her daughter-in-law a scrapbooker, but she is a retired nurse. At a time when I felt completely helpless and out of touch 30,000 feet in the air, her words were beyond comforting. It was just what I needed.

Not wanting to waste any time, I went straight to the taxi line at the airport and directly to the hospital. Ahpo was stable and after some time, opened her eyes and acknowledged Cindy, Mommy and me. Her eyes sparkled just a bit and she even had us laughing by some of the things she was saying, like her famous line, “Did you eat?” She has always been the one to look after everyone else. I am sure she can feel the prayers and love from each and every one of you out there. Words cannot express the gratitude felt from the bottom of our hearts (and probably even Ahpo’s new pacemaker)! THANK YOU!

Sending prayers for you and your family from Savannah, GA. May God keep you close and take care of your grandmother. Know that many are praying for her recovery. Hold her hand, tell her that you love her. Tell her what she means to you. It is a gift you can give to her right now. God Bless.

My prayers are with you and your family, Amy. If you wish, please jot down this Scripture and have your grandma recite it.

May God shower your family with blessings!

I said a prayer for your grandma and you and your family. I lost my grandma 3 years ago, the day after my birthday 2 weeks before i was going to visit her. She was 95. I prayed you would have her around for a long time to come.

  18. Amy says:

I know this is going to seem like a weird question but is your grandmother Japanese? I ask because my step-grandmother and aunt are Japanese and from Los Angeles. They have a wonderful group of friends in LA that always look out for each other and I’m wondering if maybe they know each other. We are Buddhist and our community is great, we will keep her in our prayers.

    • Amy says:

Hi Amy, not a weird question at all. She is Chinese. She speaks only Hakka, which unfortunately is a dying language. Thanks so much!

  23. Kathryn Sargent says:

Blessings to your Grandmother and your family! Please keep us informed on her progress. Hope she can go home soon and feel great.

    • Cathy L. says:

so sorry! I hit return before finishing my thought! Anyway, she passed away at 81, LONG before I thought she’d be gone. I totally took her for granted, thought she’d always be there. So glad you have this time to love your grandmother and appreciate her. My grandmother would have loved my husband (she raised 2 boys), and would have probably love my daughter as well! ;) I wish I had more time with her, but she left this world as a woman living independently and strong, and I can not think of any greater gift.

  24. Jacqui G says:

Sorry to hear about your Grandma but I wish you and your family all the love in the world. I am not religious but I hope all goes well xoxox

  25. Lida says:

Hope your Ahpo will have a speedy recovery. My mom is in a bit of a pickle herself, she will be 96, August 21.

    Good thoughts for you.

  26. glee says:

Blessings to you and esp to your Popo! I am so shocked to hear hakka described as a dying language. I have always heard that most Hawaii Chinese are Hakka, so just figured it would be going strong. I am half Chinese (on my dad’s side, that’s the Lee in glee), but from MI not HI. Love & aloha to Ahpo and you.

    • Amy says:

Hi Glee, It’s not a fact that it’s a dying language, but just an assumption on my part, really. I haven’t come across many people in my life who speak it fluently. Thanks for the well wishes. She is still in the ICU and getting lots of love and care, but we are so grateful for more!
